The remains of the Izawa Banko kiln

Designated by the city on May 28, 2008.

These are the remains of the “Izawa Banko” kiln founded by Takekawa Chikusai.
Among the various structures of Takegawa’s kiln, the main baking chamber of his stepped-chamber kiln remains on the premises of today’s Izawa elementary school, on the southern side of the school’s hill.

 

In operation from 1856 to 1863,
Takegawa fired teapots, oil pans, bowls, flower pots, earthen teapots, sake bottles, sake cups, flower vase, oil cans, pitchers, incense containers, garden lanterns, Chinese lion ornaments and more.
